Portugal boss says door open for Ronaldo return

Portugal manager Jorge Jesus has stated that there is still an opportunity for Cristiano Ronaldo to return to the national team if he decides to do so. The 41-year-old captain left the Nations League camp following an unused substitute appearance against Norway and learning he would not start against Denmark. Ronaldo, who holds the record for the most goals (146) in 234 appearances for Portugal, is also the world's top scorer in the sport.

After his departure, Ronaldo shared on social media his intention to communicate his reasons for leaving the team to the Portuguese people. Jesus has previously expressed his willingness to discuss the matter after Portugal's final Nations League game against Norway, which they won 2-1 to secure their place in the next round. Jesus reiterated that Ronaldo's decision on his return to the team will ultimately be his own.

Portugal will face Denmark in their next Group A4 fixture on November 14, followed by a match against Wales three days later. Ronaldo started Portugal's opening game against Wales, scoring the lone goal, but was later named as a substitute and later informed he may or may not come on. He reportedly became frustrated at being made to warm up during the second half and not being brought on, making him the first captain since 2008 to be an unused substitute in a competitive Portugal match.

The AC Milan striker has scored in all three starts with Ronaldo's absence. Meanwhile, Joao Cancelo said that Ronaldo is Portugal's captain and the greatest player the nation has ever had, emphasizing that things will likely conclude positively. Teammate Nuno Mendes reiterated their acceptance of Ronaldo's potential return, stating that they would welcome him with open arms.
