I made a lens diffuser for my camera using panty hose to get dreamy, soft-focus shots!

The traditional method of applying Vaseline to a UV filter for a hazy effect has been enhanced with modern DIY techniques. Two materials commonly used for creating diffusers are bubble wrap and panty hose.

Bubble wrap, when placed over the lens, produces a highly diffuse effect, particularly when sunlight is the primary light source. By creating a hole in the center, a sharp area remains in the center of the frame. The aperture should be set to its widest setting for optimal results.

For a more targeted effect, a telephoto lens (like the Nikon Z 8 and Nikkor AF-S 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G) can be used. At the telephoto end of the focal range, the bubble wrap appears more opaque, forcing attention to the main subject while creating a diffused background. Alternatively, a wide-angle lens (like the same camera and lens combo at a wider aperture) results in a more distorted, glass-like appearance behind the bubble wrap.

Pantyhose, when used as a diffuser, offers a different set of creative possibilities. The color and thickness of the pantyhose significantly impact the final result. A tan-colored pantyhose, for example, creates a warm, diffuse glow, ideal for indoor settings with warm lighting. Conversely, black pantyhose produce a pinhole effect, reducing contrast and resulting in a distinct appearance.

Experimentation is key when using these DIY lens diffusers. The aperture, focal length, and choice of material all contribute to the final outcome, making each shot unique.
