Jagex has unveiled plans for a fourth MMO game in its highly popular RuneScape series. After the announcement at the recent RuneFest event in Birmingham, the developer revealed that an animated adaptation of RuneScape, produced in collaboration with YouTuber Charlie MoistCr1TiKaL White, is also in the works. According to Jagex, the upcoming game, currently known as RS4, will bring the beloved world of Gielinor to life using the Unreal Engine, combining the rich history, freedom, and community-driven spirit that have defined RuneScape for the past 25 years with modern technology and game design capabilities.
The new MMO, still in its early stages of development, is at least a few years away from release and has not yet been given a final name. While a numerical sequel might seem fitting, Jagex has not committed to naming the game "RuneScape 4," numbering or otherwise. In a blog post, the studio explained that the announcement of RS4 was made well in advance to allow the team to leverage the engine and tools developed for Jagex's recently launched Dragonwilds spin-off.
Jagex emphasized that RS4 will operate alongside existing titles, such as Old School RuneScape, providing players with an additional way to experience the RuneScape universe. The new MMO will be set in Gielinor's Sixth Age, beginning in Ashenfall, a region first introduced in RuneScape: Dragonwilds. Jagex plans to expand the game far beyond Ashenfall, exploring both familiar and new areas of Gielinor.
Meanwhile, the animated adaptation of RuneScape, developed with Charlie White (MoistCr1TiKaL) and LA production company Lyrical Media, will bring the world, characters, and stories of Gielinor to life, drawing inspiration from 25 years of history and over 300 million player accounts since the launch of RuneScape.
