Evenepoel puts worlds ‘disappointment’ to bed with European crown
Belgian rider Remco Evenepoel pipped Italy's Giulio Ciccone at the finish line to claim the European championship title.
Belgian cyclist Remco Evenepoel secured the European road cycling championship title on Sunday, marking a significant moment after missing out on the world championship title earlier this month. The 2024 Olympic road racing gold medallist triumphed over Italian competitor Giulio Ciccone in Sencur, Slovenia, just edging out the competition in a photo finish.
Evenepoel, who finished second in the continental race in 2021, expressed his elation at returning to peak form after the disappointment of the worlds event. The 2019 and 2025 European time trial gold medallist credited the challenging nature of the performance, stating it felt amazing. Despite the absence of several top riders, including pre-race favorite Tadej Pogacar, who was absent due to injury, Evenepoel's victory was a testament to his dominance in the sport.
