Car in fatal Gerik crash went into opposite lane, say police

A fatal crash in Gerik, Perak, which claimed the lives of four individuals, including a child, is under investigation by police, who claim the car involved veered into the opposing lane and collided with a lorry, police chief Alwi Zainal Abidin stated. The accident occurred on the East-West Highway near Tasik Banding around 1:30 pm today.

Perak police chief Alwi Zainal Abidin reported that the Perodua Axia, driven by a 19-year-old man, was transporting four passengers on their way from Gerik to Jeli, Kelantan. The Hino lorry and Proton Persona involved were traveling in opposite directions - the lorry from Jeli to Gerik, and the Persona from Gerik to Jeli. The lorry was carrying a 42-year-old man and his 34-year-old male attendant.

According to Alwi, the Axia lost control, crossed into the opposite lane, struck the Persona before smashing into the front of the lorry. The collision caused the Axia to become lodged underneath the lorry, dragging it a distance of three to seven meters. Four occupants of the Axia perished at the scene, while one child suffered severe injuries.

The driver and passengers of the Persona, as well as the lorry driver and attendant, were unharmed. Authorities are currently seeking to gather evidence from independent witnesses and review any CCTV and dashcam footage that may be available.
