Brazil's presidential election on Sunday saw a narrowing lead for Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, the 45-year-old son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, in the first round, according to Datafolha, a leading pollster. Lula da Silva, the 80-year-old incumbent leftist president, sought a fourth term against Flavio, who aims to restore his father's right-wing movement to power.
With around 65% of votes counted, Flavio led Lula with 49.58% of the vote to Lula's 42.25%. To win the election outright, a candidate must secure more than 50% of the vote. Polls have indicated that a runoff between the two leading candidates, Lula and Flavio, is likely to take place on October 25, with surveys predicting a close contest.
Early results indicated that southern states, which typically favor Bolsonaro, reported faster, while votes from Lula's stronghold in the northeast were still being tallied.
