Tyler Adams gets USMNT captain's armband back as new World Cup cycle begins

In a move marking the start of a new World Cup cycle, the United States men's national soccer team has reinstated Tyler Adams as their captain. The honor returns to the Wappingers Falls native, aged 27, who previously served as the team's youngest captain during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar at the age of 23. Adams, who currently plays for Bournemouth FC in the Premier League, resumed wearing the armband in the group's opening match against Peru, leading the team to a 4-1 victory.

This recent appointment succeeds veteran defender Tim Ream, who captained the team throughout the 2022 World Cup. Ream's leadership was honored in his hometown of St. Louis in the days leading up to the USMNT's 4-2 win over Chile.

Adams joins Antonee Robinson, also 27, as the most experienced players on the squad, which has an average age of just 22 years and 319 days. Robinson captured the captaincy for the first time against Chile.

Adams' journey to being named captain began in his hometown of Wappingers Falls, where his competitive spirit was nurtured through local fields and his family's unwavering support. Growing up, Adams trained with the Poughkeepsie Heat and Red Bulls Academy before launching his professional career, which eventually led him to Germany and England.

A testament to Adams' dedication to his craft, he recently unveiled a soccer pitch bearing his name at Martz Field in his hometown, where he once attended summer camp as a child. Adams will lead the USMNT in their upcoming match against Mexico at 10 p.m. ET on Saturday, with the game airing on TNT, Telemundo, and Universo, as well as streaming on HBO Max and Peacock.

The USMNT will then face Canada at 8 p.m. ET on Tuesday at Allianz Field in St. Paul, Minnesota, with coverage available on TNT, truTV, and Universo, as well as streaming on HBO Max and Peacock.
