Former Tar Heel and ACC Tournament MVP hired by Monmouth Basketball
Shammond Williams and King Rice used to play for Dean Smith. Now, the two former Tar Heels are coaching together in New Jersey.
Former UNC basketball standout King Rice, known for his role in the 1993 National Championship season, is now leading Monmouth University's men's basketball team. Monmouth's roster boasts several other former UNC players, including assistant coach Shammond Williams, who was named ACC Tournament MVP in 1997 and led the Tar Heels to a conference title.
Williams has played professionally in the NBA and overseas since retiring in 2012. Other former UNC players in coaching roles with the Hawks include Director of Player Development Deon Thompson, and assistant coaches Sean May and Brandon Robinson. Monmouth will host the Tar Heels in a non-conference game on November 23 at the Smith Center, a matchup with a strong Carolina Family feel.
