Donald Trump's surprise "SI" announcement causes domain gold rush as Melania Trump's birth country sees over a 100X increase in interest in Super Intelligence domain names

In September 2026, US President Donald Trump's announcement that the US would call artificial intelligence "superintelligence," or SI, led to an unprecedented surge in domain name registrations for the .si top-level domain. This domain is associated with Slovenia, which is the birthplace of First Lady Melania Trump. Following the announcement, the number of .si domain registrations skyrocketed, with over 46,066 new registrations logged in September alone, a staggering 13.1x increase compared to August's 3,515 registrations.

The surge in interest continued, with an average of over 12,600 domains registered per day by the time of the report. This unexpected wave of domain name speculation has benefited the registry of the .si domain, located in Slovenia, though the registry has maintained that the financial gains are limited due to their consistent pricing model.

The trend also sparked betting activities on whether Trump would rename AI to SI by September 30, with bets totaling $151,000 by September 23. The potential for lucrative speculation exists in the buying of high-value domain names, should the trend continue to gain traction. However, the White House fact sheet states that the renaming only applies to executive branch documents and does not necessarily replace the term 'AI' in broader usage.
