Singapore's Darren Yap clinches virtual taekwondo bronze at Asian Games
This is Yap's second Games medal, after his joint-bronze in the men's individual poomsae on Thursday.
NAGOYA: Endurance cyclist Lau New Joe, plagued by misfortune in recent months, wrapped up his inaugural Asiad appearance by finishing a solid seventh in the men's omnium at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games. New Joe amassed 24 points from the scratch race, 28 from the tempo race, 30 from the elimination race, and 28 from the points race, totaling 110 points at the Izu Velodrome in Shizuoka.
The 24-year-old had experienced a severe collision during the Glasgow Commonwealth Games two months prior, which left him with broken teeth, along with abrasions and lacerations all over his body. Despite recovering, New Joe was again unfortunate to be involved in a crash just days before his event began. National track cycling head coach Amir Mustafa Rusli expressed empathy for New Joe, acknowledging that he had anticipated a better performance than seventh place.
The coach lamented New Joe's continuous misfortunes, stating that he truly felt bad for the athlete who has consistently faced misfortune. Japan's Kanta Umezawa emerged victorious in the omnium with 193 points, while Hong Kong's Chu Tsun Wai and China's Wu Junjie secured the silver and bronze medals, respectively.
