Newmont’s Ahafo North Mine has given a brand-new Toyota Hilux pick-up worth GHS 510,967 to the Ghana Police Service to aid security work in the Tano North Municipality. This gift came after requests from the Duayaw Nkwanta Divisional Police Headquarters and the Tano North Municipal Assembly for a vehicle to bolster municipal security services. The vehicle will improve the mobility and speed of police officers serving the municipality.
At the handover event, Charles Bissue, General Manager of the Ahafo North mine, said the donation shows Newmont’s dedication to improving security and the quality of life in its host communities through teamwork with state bodies and other partners. “Safety and security are crucial to every community’s economic growth and social welfare, and this gift aims to improve the police’s logistical needs at the municipal level,” he said.
Pius Opoku, Tano North Municipal Chief Executive, thanked Newmont for the helpful support and explained how the vehicle will improve security operations and the police’s ability to respond quickly to emergencies in Tano North and nearby areas.
The honouring ceremony also saw 99 graduates from the company’s Learnership Programme receive their certificates. This graduation marks 99 young people from Newmont’s ten host communities in Ahafo who have successfully completed the programme since it started in 2023. The milestone shows Newmont’s ongoing commitment to helping young people build skills and find jobs in its host communities.
The programme, now including training in Haul Truck, Drill and Blast, and Process Plant Operations, teaches practical skills and work experience. Since 2005, Newmont has also run the Newmont Apprenticeship Programme, which has helped thousands of young people get jobs in mining and other industries.
