In Case You Still Have Faith in Humanity, Here’s an Influencer “Riding” a Sea Turtle While It Tries to Lay Eggs
"The desire for fame and viral views has pushed many to do evil and stupid acts." The post In Case You Still Have Faith in Humanity, Here’s an Influencer “Riding” a Sea Turtle While It Tries to Lay Eggs appeared first on Futurism .
In a desperate attempt to garner attention in an oversaturated world of graphic videos and AI-generated content, a Ukrainian fitness influencer and his wife found themselves at the center of a viral controversy while attempting to "ride" a large adult sea turtle attempting to lay eggs. Vadym Oleynik and Olena Kravchenko posted the footage to their social media platforms, which quickly gained traction and drew condemnation from conservation groups and viewers alike.
The Ras al Hadd Turtle Reserve, where the incident occurred, is a critical nesting ground for the once-endangered green turtle. Oleynik is seen in the video handling a newly-hatched turtle while attempting to sit atop the adult turtle, which is desperately trying to escape from the sand. The influencer's popular Instagram account was subsequently taken private following the backlash.
The Environment Authority of the Sultanate of Oman issued a statement confirming that they had taken legal action against Oleynik for violating wildlife protection laws in the region. Oleynik responded on Instagram, admitting he was unaware of the rules against sitting on the turtle and apologized to the environmental authority and the green sea turtle protection agency.
