‘Disturbing’: Belleville, Ont., synagogue receives antisemitic flyers after shooting
Norman Weddum said he woke up Thursday morning to find flyers blaming Jewish people "for everything under the sun" had been distributed overnight to the Sons of Jacob synagogue.
A Belleville, Ontario synagogue received antisemitic flyers following a shooting incident last month. The president of the Sons of Jacob synagogue, Norman Weddum, discovered the flyers in his home and throughout the city's east end on Thursday morning. Four different flyers blamed Jewish people for various issues, suggesting the distribution was not done by a single individual.
Police are actively investigating the flyers and the recent shooting that targeted the synagogue during Yom Kippur. The shooter, Sean Ward, was killed in the attack, which left Const. Jeff Smith critically injured and required multiple surgeries. Ward was a former soldier who served for about five years. The incident has prompted synagogues and Jewish institutions to review their security measures.
