Dates Announced for 2026 Nobel Prize Award Ceremony

The 2026 Nobel Prize announcement schedule has been unveiled, commencing on October 5 with the award for physiology or medicine. Subsequent prizes will be granted for science, literature, and peace, concluding on October 12 with the economics award. Each accolade now comes with a substantial monetary reward of 12 million Swedish kronor, equivalent to roughly $1.21 million, in addition to global acclaim.

Established through the last will of Swedish chemist and industrialist Alfred Nobel, renowned for inventing dynamite, these prizes aim to honor work that advances humanity's well-being. Nobel's fortune intended to fund these awards, but legal challenges over his will caused a delay until 1901 before the inaugural ceremonies took place.

The original categories encompassed physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature, and peace. The economics prize emerged separately in 1968, endowed by Sweden’s central bank in commemoration of Nobel. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, alongside the Royal Norwegian Academy of Sciences for the peace prize, selects the laureates.

Renowned recipients span from Albert Einstein and Marie Curie to Ernest Hemingway, Nelson Mandela, Malala Yousafzai, and Mother Teresa. Curie achieved distinction twice, while Linus Pauling remains the sole individual to garner two Nobel Prizes without sharing either award. The ceremonies are slated for December 10, commemorating Nobel's passing, with the peace ceremony held in Oslo, Norway, and the remaining awards presented in Stockholm, Sweden.
