Amazon seeks to offload $8B of Nvidia chips to investors, FT reports

München and San Francisco - Google is aggressively expanding into the burgeoning semiconductor business, steadily challenging industry leader Nvidia. "Chips will become a part of our growth story," said Matt Renner, Chief Revenue Officer of Google Cloud, according to the Handelsblatt. Google has been using its own chips in its data centers for some time now, but it also sells the components to external clients. Renner explained, "We are tapping into a new market."

Microsoft, Google's rival, also employs custom-designed chips, but currently uses them exclusively for internal purposes. Amazon, on the other hand, is reportedly negotiating with external parties for the sale of its chips, but has not yet announced a deal. Unlike its competitors, Google aims to carve out a share of the established semiconductor market, primarily aiming at Nvidia.

Experts believe Google's chances of success are favorable. Peter Fintl, a chip expert at the technology consultancy Capgemini, stated, "Nvidia's customers are actively seeking alternatives." Nvidia currently dominates the market for AI accelerators. The US company's graphics processors are essential for the training and operation of generative AI. For years, Nvidia has held a market share of approximately 90 percent in this space.
