NEIP to transition into Ghana Startup Agency – CEO

The National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP) of Ghana is set to evolve into a specialized agency dedicated to nurturing the country's startup ecosystem. This transformation was announced by NEIP CEO Eric Adjei Esq. during a conference in South Africa. The agency will move beyond its current role as a government-sponsored program, gaining independent funding and legislative support to implement targeted strategies for startups and innovative businesses.

According to Adjei, this shift signifies a significant commitment to restructuring Ghana's entrepreneurship and innovation landscape.

The NEIP has already supported 10,887 young entrepreneurs through its flagship Adwumawura Programme, providing training, mentorship, technical assistance, funding, and market access. Out of these beneficiaries, 3,625 received grants via a transparent selection process overseen by an independent committee including academics, experienced entrepreneurs and government officials.

Additionally, NEIP has established a financing mechanism with the Venture Capital Trust Fund (VCTF) to offer debt and equity financing to high-potential businesses, aiming to foster growth, job creation and scaling. The CEO emphasized that entrepreneurship support should encompass a comprehensive ecosystem, not just financial aid.

Under the Students Entrepreneurship and Enterprise Development Programme (SEED), NEIP plans to train 5,000 students per year at 36 universities, fostering a symbiotic relationship between education, innovation, and entrepreneurship within university systems. This initiative, developed in partnership with the National Union of Ghana Students, various university hubs and the National Service Authority, seeks to cultivate an entrepreneurial mindset among students, enabling them to create and commercialize their innovations.

The Young Africa Innovates (YAI) Programme, a collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme and the Mastercard Foundation, has already trained around 1,500 innovators, leading to the creation of approximately 4,823 jobs. Adjei stressed the importance of extending these initiatives beyond urban centers to engage young people in less developed regions, recognizing the potential for rural areas to produce innovative solutions.

NEIP is also actively involved in initiatives like the Ghana Women and Youth Employment and Social Cohesion Programme (GWYESCO), which focuses on equipping women and young people with market-relevant skills, access to finance, and business development resources. By treating issues such as youth employment, entrepreneurship, and social cohesion as interconnected elements, NEIP aims to create a holistic environment conducive to sustainable economic growth.
