Free daily data: NCC, ALTON roll out zero rated access to educational platforms

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) will implement the Zero-Rated Data Access to Approved Educational Platforms and Content Initiative starting October 1, 2026. The program aims to provide eligible users with up to 100 megabytes of free daily data to access designated educational platforms, fostering digital learning opportunities.

Executive Vice Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the NCC, Dr. Aminu Maida, highlighted that the initiative aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's vision for a $1 trillion economy, emphasizing the importance of investing in people through education and skills acquisition. He stated that the initiative's cumulative impact, when considered over time and across millions of learners, represents a significant industry investment in Nigeria's future.

ALTON Chairman, Engr. Gbenga Adebayo, revealed that industry stakeholders have contributed nearly ₦200 billion for the pilot involving 5,000 learners. Adebayo emphasized that the initiative demonstrates the telecommunications industry's commitment to supporting the government's education and digital inclusion agenda, going beyond the data allocation to include devices, terminals, and other resources.

The industry's involvement, he said, is an expression of confidence in Nigeria's young people and the nation's future.
