Flydubai pilot Smit Machchhar hailed hero for averting disaster on Israel flight

Indian pilot Smit Machchhar has been hailed a hero after preventing a potential catastrophe on Flydubai flight FZ 1073. The Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, publicly recognized Machchhar's extraordinary bravery. According to reports, the Boeing 737 plummeted nearly 20,000 feet during a cockpit brawl, prompting the aircraft to divert to Saudi Arabia.

Netanyahu claimed that Machchhar, the captain, was attacked by his first officer, leading the captain to fight back, unlock the cockpit door, and enable passengers to overpower the assailant, averting a mid-air disaster. The majority of the passengers were Israeli, Netanyahu added. Israel's parliament speaker, Amir Ohana, also paid tribute to Machchhar.

The first officer was subdued by passengers, as evidenced by videos widely circulated in Israeli media. Emergency services from the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Israel are currently investigating the incident. Neither the first officer's identity nor any details about the incident have been disclosed, as earlier reports about the pilots' nationalities were inaccurate.

Netanyahu's announcement of Machchhar's actions stirred intense political backlash in Israel, with accusations that he was politicizing the event to advance his election campaign. Machchhar's name was widely reported by media outlets in India.
