Barcelona-Amsterdam, Europe's most stressful air route for nervous flyers

The route between Barcelona-El Prat and Amsterdam-Schiphol tops a ranking that also lists Madrid-London Heathrow in tenth place, according to AirAdvisor.

Europe's most anxiety-inducing air route for nervous flyers is the journey between Amsterdam Schiphol and Barcelona El Prat, according to an analysis by AirAdvisor. This route tops the list of Europe's top ten most stressful air routes, with Madrid Barajas–London Heathrow also ranking high.

The study, which does not assess air safety but factors in delays, cancellations, weather conditions, and flight duration, attributes the high stress level to factors like long waits at boarding gates, unexpected cancellations, and challenging weather conditions. AirAdvisor CEO Anton Radchenko explains that these elements can considerably heighten a passenger's anxiety.

The Amsterdam–Barcelona connection earned the highest score of 75.1 out of 100 among the 26 European routes analyzed. During September 2025 to August 2026, 7.02% of its flights were delayed by over an hour, 0.83% by more than three hours, and 2.93% were cancelled. Additionally, the route faces exposure to adverse weather at the Dutch airport.

The second most stressful route, London Heathrow–Amsterdam, has the highest cancellation rate at 3.69%, scoring 63.8 points. This route, connecting two of the world's busiest airports, ranks among the top ten. Madrid Barajas–London Heathrow follows closely, ranking tenth with a score of 40.8. During the same period, 3.38% of its flights experienced delays over an hour, 0.17% for over three hours, and 1.15% were cancelled.

Other Spanish connections, such as Barcelona El Prat to Rome Fiumicino (45.2 points) and Barcelona to Palma de Mallorca (13th place), also appear in the ranking. The latter is particularly notable for its delays, affecting 6.89% of flights.

The index, which measures predictability of flights based on cancellations, delays, weather, and journey duration, does not evaluate flight safety. Radchenko suggests that knowing past incidents can help anxious flyers prepare better for their journeys. The top ten most stressful routes in Europe are: Amsterdam–Barcelona (75.1), London Heathrow–Amsterdam (63.8), Manchester–Dublin (63.4), Lisbon–Madeira (61.4), Paris Charles de Gaulle–Nice (60.8), Oslo–Stavanger (46.8), Barcelona–Rome Fiumicino (45.2), London Heathrow–Frankfurt (44.2), Oslo–Trondheim (42.4), and Madrid–London Heathrow (40.8).
