WhatsApp introduces parental controls to help parents manage teens’ accounts

WhatsApp has unveiled new parental controls aimed at helping parents manage their teenage children's usage of the messaging app without gaining access to private conversations. Announced on September 30, 2026, these optional controls are intended for joint setup between parents and teenagers. They cover critical aspects such as privacy settings, group interactions, Channels, Status updates, and engagements with Meta AI, while ensuring that personal messages and calls remain private and encrypted.

Parents can control who can view a teenager's profile photo and who can add them to groups. If a teenager later wishes to loosen these privacy settings, parental consent, secured by a PIN, will be required. Parents will also receive alerts upon a teenager joining or exiting a group, or when the group size grows significantly. These controls extend to WhatsApp Channels and Status, enabling parents to dictate how their teenager utilizes Channels, the Status updates they can view, and who can see the teenager's Status updates.

Parents can opt for WhatsApp's standard experience for users aged 13 and above or a more restrictive "Limited Content" setting for their teenager. Meta AI is also incorporated, but parental controls ensure parents cannot read private chats or listen to calls, maintaining end-to-end encryption for personal messages and calls. The system is designed with a single parental PIN and alerts to keep parents informed without intruding into private conversations.

The controls are optional, allowing parents to decide the extent of supervision their teenager requires, modify individual settings, or entirely disable the controls. WhatsApp plans to further develop these parental controls based on feedback from families. For parents, this means enhanced oversight over privacy, group interactions, public Status updates, and AI usage, all while preserving the privacy of direct conversations between teenagers and other WhatsApp users.
