Trump unveils S. Korea's plans for US investment, including Alaska LNG project

On Wednesday, U.S. President Donald Trump revealed South Korea's plans for investment in the United States, including an Alaska liquefied natural gas (LNG) project, under the terms of last year's bilateral trade agreement. The agreement saw South Korea commit to investing $350 billion in the U.S., with $150 billion earmarked for the shipbuilding sector and the rest for strategic investments, in exchange for reduced U.S. tariffs on Korean goods.

During his announcement, Trump emphasized the economic triumphs under his tenure as he prepares for the November midterm elections, a period marked by public apprehension over the ongoing war with Iran, which has driven up energy prices and heightened economic uncertainties. The LNG project involves the construction of a 1,298-kilometer-long pipeline from the North Slope, home to substantial natural gas reserves, to southern Alaska for the purpose of transporting cooled liquid natural gas to Asia.

In addition to the LNG project, South Korea also plans to build a large-scale gas-fired power plant in Encinal, Texas.
