Trump unveils S. Korea's plans for U.S. investment, including Alaska LNG project

On September 30, U.S. President Donald Trump unveiled South Korea's investment plans, including a liquefied natural gas (LNG) project in Alaska, under their bilateral trade agreement. This commitment is part of South Korea's pledge to invest $350 billion in the United States, with $150 billion designated for the shipbuilding sector and the remaining funds allocated to strategic investments, in exchange for reduced U.S. tariffs on Korean goods.

Addressing public concerns amidst the ongoing war with Iran, which has led to high energy prices and economic uncertainties, Trump emphasized the economic achievements under his administration. The LNG project entails constructing a 1,298-kilometer-long pipeline from Alaska's North Slope, a region rich in natural gas reserves, to southern Alaska for further transportation of cooled liquid natural gas to Asian markets.

Additional projects under the agreement include the development of a substantial gas-fired power plant in Encinal, Texas, and the construction of eight nuclear reactors, all as part of South Korea's commitment to bolstering U.S. infrastructure and energy sectors.
