‘They’ll have a problem’ – Denmark coach, Riemer predicts Portugal’s fate after Ronaldo’s retirement

Denmark's head coach Brian Riemer has cautioned that Portugal will encounter significant difficulties following Cristiano Ronaldo's retirement from international football. Ronaldo, now 41, has been an integral part of the Portugal national team for more than two decades and is expected to retire after the 2026-27 season. The 2023-24 international window has seen Portugal triumph over Wales and Norway.

Ronaldo received media attention during the Norway match for his reaction to being substituted off the bench without playing.

Discussing Ronaldo's impact during a press conference, Riemer highlighted the potential leadership vacuum that may arise in the Portugal team post-Ronaldo's retirement. He explained, "I truly believe that upon his retirement, Portugal will face a problem, as there exists something referred to as hierarchy. Portugal’s national team includes many prominent personalities, and hence, who will assume the role of decision-maker and leader for the team? I believe this could pose a substantial challenge."

Ronaldo missed the Norway fixture due to absence but aims to reclaim his place in Portugal's starting lineup for their upcoming match against Denmark on Thursday. The Portuguese team currently leads Group A4 in the UEFA Nations League with a total of 6 points from two matches. After their game against Denmark, Portugal will host Norway on October 4th to wrap up their fixtures during the international break.
