Sisi issues new Presidential directives regarding private vehicle licensing

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has directed the Interior Ministry to improve the efficiency and quality of private vehicle licensing procedures. The directives aim to rationalize costs and ensure citizens receive courteous treatment throughout the licensing process. Vehicle license renewal fees are determined by the vehicle's engine capacity and the license duration, with additional expenses for inspection, insurance, documentation, and the electronic sticker.

Based on data, renewing a three-year car license can cost between LE4,000 and LE6,000 or more, depending on the vehicle category and engine displacement, excluding traffic fines.

The tax amount varies based on engine capacity: LE225 for 1,030 cc to 1,330 cc engines, LE750 for 1,330 cc to 1,630 cc engines, and LE3,000 for 1,630 cc to 2,030 cc engines. For vehicles with over 2,030 cc engines, the tax is 2.5 percent of the vehicle's value. When renewing a license for three years, the tax and mandatory insurance cost approximately LE3,390, with an additional LE190 for insurance.

To obtain a car license in 2026, applicants must meet several requirements, including paying prescribed taxes and fees, obtaining civil liability insurance, ensuring the vehicle meets safety and road-worthiness standards, installing a GPS device, being at least 18 years old (or 21 for professional-use licenses), passing a medical examination, possessing an educational or literacy certificate, completing a safe driving fundamentals course, undergoing a drug screening test, and not having certain criminal convictions.

The application also requires four 4×6 personal photos, two medical certificates, two copies of the national ID card, and equipping the vehicle with a reflective warning triangle, first-aid kit, and fire extinguishers.
