Resolution demanding accountability for Americans killed by Israel fails in US Senate

A resolution demanding accountability for Americans killed by Israel failed to gain Senate approval on Tuesday, with just 47 lawmakers voting in its favor. The lone Republican supporting the measure was Kentucky Senator Rand Paul, while Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman was the sole Democrat to vote in its favor. One hundred lawmakers make up the Senate, a body of the U.S. Congress.

The resolution, introduced by Maryland Democratic Senator Chris Van Hollen, was aimed at obtaining human rights reports from the State Department on countries that receive U.S. assistance. Israel, being the largest recipient of U.S. foreign aid, had been killing nine U.S. citizens in the occupied West Bank since 2022, with three others imprisoned. Van Hollen stated that these victims and their families deserved answers on their deaths, but Republicans denied them that opportunity.

The Palestinian people have also faced the consequences of this violence, with Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh being killed by Israeli forces in 2022, and Aysenur Ezgi Eygi, a Turkish-American student, killed by Israeli forces during a protest in 2024. Israeli attacks, both military and from settler groups, have resulted in over 1,100 Palestinians being killed in the occupied West Bank over the past three years.
