Alberta extends deadline to apply for $100 energy rebate

Alberta's provincial government has extended the deadline for residents to apply for a $100 energy rebate by a month. The rebate, announced in June, will now be available for application until October 31 online. Starting Thursday, the province will pause its fuel tax for three months to alleviate the impact on consumers. Premier Danielle Smith initially introduced the rebate due to concerns that tax cuts do not always benefit consumers.

However, Smith revealed last week that Albertans are dissatisfied with the rebate program, leading her government to revert to a 13-cent-per-liter tax reduction on gasoline and diesel until the end of the year. Approximately 3.4 million adult Albertans are eligible for the rebate, but only around 1.5 million have applied so far. Finance Minister Jason Nixon stated that the current application rate is lower than expected.
