Prostate Health Foundation Ghana begins nationwide screening for prison inmates and officers

The Prostate Health Foundation Ghana has launched a nationwide prostate and general health screening program for prison inmates and officers in Ghana. The initiative aims to promote preventive healthcare, early detection, and health awareness among incarcerated individuals who often lack regular access to such screenings due to their confinement.

The screening kicked off at the Kumasi Central Prison, where 350 people, including 300 inmates and 50 officers, received services. A six-person medical team comprising two doctors, a sonographer, three nurses, and a lab technician carried out tests such as prostate scans, Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) tests, hepatitis B, typhoid fever, malaria, and fasting blood sugar checks.

Rebecca Nana Yaa Konadu, the Foundation's CEO, noted that these screenings are crucial for long-imprisoned inmates, as unmonitored prostate conditions can become severe by the time their sentences conclude. The Foundation identified several potential prostate issues among the inmates, referring them for further tests. Notably, some prison officers exhibited elevated blood pressure, underscoring the necessity of regular blood-pressure monitoring, especially for staff in physically demanding roles.

The program aspires to extend its reach to various communities and institutions nationwide, focusing on men aged 40 and above who may have limited access to regular prostate screenings. Prostate cancer is a significant global health concern, and early detection is vital to improving health outcomes.
