President William Ruto mourns Wicknell Chivayo’s death

President William Ruto expressed his deep sorrow over the passing of Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivayo, who died in a helicopter crash in Zimbabwe. The President paid tribute to Chivayo, describing him as a dear friend, in a condolence message at 1:13 am on Thursday, October 1, 2026. Chivayo and his wife, Lucy Muteke, were among the casualties when the helicopter crashed in Marondera Rural on Wednesday evening, September 30, 2026.

No survivors were reported. "I am deeply saddened by the tragic passing of my friend, Wicknell Chivayo, together with his wife, Lucy Muteke, and the other lives lost in the helicopter crash in Zimbabwe," Ruto stated. Ruto highlighted the personal bond he shared with Chivayo, noting that their friendship had grown stronger due to Chivayo's frequent visits to Kenya.

"Wicknell was a dear friend whose warmth touched many people. I will remember him for his friendship, his energy and his deep conviction in the possibilities of our continent," Ruto added. The businessman had met Ruto on numerous occasions, including at State House and at the President's residence in Kilgoris. Chivayo had also spoken about potential investment opportunities in Kenya.

In his message, Ruto extended his condolences to the families of all those who lost their lives, to President Emmerson Mnangagwa of Zimbabwe, and to the entire Zimbabwean populace. "I convey my deepest condolences to the families of all those who lost their lives, to President Mnangagwa, the people of Zimbabwe and everyone mourning this tragic loss," Ruto said.

The helicopter crash occurred at approximately 5 pm on Wednesday, September 30, 2026. Zimbabwe Republic Police confirmed the incident before Chivayo's family subsequently identified him and Muteke among the deceased. Ruto concluded his statement with a prayer for the deceased. "May God grant Wicknell, Lucy and all those who perished eternal rest," he prayed.
