The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) has initiated a fall-prevention initiative aimed at mitigating risks and injuries among seniors aged 60 and above. Over the next 45 months, approximately 17,000 individuals will participate in the Jockey Club SafeMove fall management programme. During the programme's launch, Marco Pang, Chair Professor of Neurorehabilitation and Head of the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences, emphasized the importance of teaching self-protection and safe landing techniques to minimize the impact of falls.
He explained that proper body turning and strength in various muscle groups, as well as fast and smooth coordination, are crucial in preventing fractures, which are most commonly hip fractures. Amy Fu, Associate Head and Professor of the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences, highlighted that proper falling techniques could reduce fracture risks by up to 72 percent.
The programme will incorporate judo techniques to enable quick and effective reactions upon falling.
