Nairobi, Kenya, September 30 – Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen is set to attend the groundbreaking ceremony for the proposed East Africa Oil Refinery in Lamu, alongside President William Ruto, Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangote, and other prominent figures. The ceremony, scheduled for Wednesday, marks the beginning of the multibillion-shilling project backed by Dangote Industries.

The refinery, with a capacity to process 700,000 barrels of crude oil daily, is projected to be completed by 2030. The facility aims to decrease East Africa's dependence on imported petroleum products, bolster regional fuel security, and stimulate related industries. Authorities anticipate a substantial gathering, with up to 14 heads of state and approximately 2,000 invited guests expected to attend the event.

The project is expected to transform Lamu into a significant energy and petrochemical hub, potentially generating around 50,000 jobs and reducing Kenya's reliance on imported petroleum. Dangote arrived in Lamu on Tuesday, and construction materials have already been transported to the area via the Port of Lamu. Murkomen's arrival follows heightened security preparations for the high-profile event, which is anticipated to draw government officials, regional leaders, investors, and locals.

However, the groundbreaking ceremony faces challenges due to a land dispute in the Hindi/Manda/Magogoni area. A court order from the Malindi Environment and Land Court directs parties to maintain the status quo on the contested land identified as LR No. 13061 until further proceedings are held. The case was initiated by Salim Tima Swale and 132 others, who claim ancestral rights to the land they have used for generations.
