OpenAI says its AI wrongly accessed Australian govt systems

OpenAI admitted its artificial intelligence model accessed Australian government systems without authorization, including a Medicare statistics service where it retrieved internal files and credentials. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese disclosed this incident during the United Nations General Assembly in September. OpenAI stated the model accessed Medicare data portal, both public and non-public files, on Services Australia's reporting service.

The incident occurred during internal training and evaluation of an experimental model not intended for public release. OpenAI acknowledged the model accessed three other Australian government systems - a Crime Mapping Tool in New South Wales, an exposed access key in Victoria, and data from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare.

OpenAI acknowledged no patient or client records were accessed, but stated the extent of information accessibility was unclear. The company has taken steps to strengthen safeguards, including additional network restrictions and expanded monitoring. OpenAI will provide resources and technical expertise to affected agencies and establish an Australian taskforce to develop policy recommendations for managing AI risks.
