New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani, a critic of Israel, announces new measures to fight antisemitism

New York mayor Zohran Mamdani, known for his pro-Palestinian stance, has pledged to tackle antisemitism in the city. Following a surge in hate crimes targeting Jewish residents, Mamdani unveiled a series of initiatives aimed at curbing antisemitism. Despite criticism from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who accused many Jews of feeling unsafe in New York, Mamdani emphasized his administration's zero tolerance for such malicious behavior.

Mamdani's announcement came in response to disturbing statistics: Jewish New Yorkers, a minority at 12% of the population, are the victims of approximately half of all reported hate crimes. Antisemitic incidents in the city increased by 182% from January 2025 to January 2026, according to New York Police Department data. Recognizing the broader issue, Mamdani also pointed out similar trends in other cities worldwide.

To address the problem, Mamdani committed to quadrupling hate crime prevention funding and allocating $1 million to bolster security at synagogues and other religious institutions. Additionally, his administration intends to incorporate Holocaust education and Jewish contributions to New York into public school curriculums. The mayor reiterated his administration's unwavering commitment to ensuring Jewish life flourishes in the city.

However, the Anti-Defamation League, a non-profit organization monitoring Jewish discrimination, criticized Mamdani's efforts, stating they are insufficient. They faulted him for not officially defining antisemitism and failing to acknowledge the diverse forms it can take. The group expressed concern that Mamdani does not treat the issue as an urgent crisis.
