New York mayor, an Israel critic, announces steps to curb antisemitism

New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani, a vocal pro-Palestinian supporter, has recently unveiled several initiatives aimed at addressing the growing issue of antisemitism in the city. This announcement comes in the wake of a marked increase in antisemitic incidents, with Jewish New Yorkers representing only 12% of the population but bearing the brunt of approximately half of all reported hate crimes.

Mamdani, who has consistently denied accusations of failing to tackle antisemitism, now acknowledges the gravity of the situation, stating that his administration will not tolerate any form of antisemitism in New York, be it on subways, workplaces, or online platforms.

The mayor's measures include a doubling of hate crime prevention funding, a US$1 million investment to bolster security at synagogues and other places of worship, and a commitment to enhance public school education on the Holocaust and Jewish contributions to New York. Despite these steps, Mamdani's announcement has been met with criticism from the Anti-Defamation League, which asserts that the measures fall short of adequately addressing the issue.

The league faults the mayor for failing to define antisemitism officially and for not treating the threat to Jewish New Yorkers as a pressing emergency.
