Myanmar cleaner jailed 16 years for stabbing 80-year-old fruit seller

In a Kuala Lumpur courtroom, a Myanmar cleaner, Shofi Husson Sofo Rahman, 29, has been sentenced to 16 years in prison for the stabbing death of an 80-year-old fruit seller, Ah Kau @ Yow Chow Chong. The incident occurred three years ago on September 26, 2023, at a residence in Taman OUG, where Ah Kau had gone to collect fruits stored at Shofi's home.

An argument ensued between the two, leading Shofi to stab Ah Kau multiple times, causing severe injuries to his neck and chest. Dr Koo Zhao Peng's post-mortem examination confirmed the cause of death as stab wounds to the neck. A forensic pathologist testified to finding stab wounds on Ah Kau's face, neck, chest, and arm. The court heard that CCTV footage showed Ah Kau leaving the scene before Shofi arrived and fled after discarding the knife.

Shofi appeared calm during the sentencing, while his lawyer argued for a sentence of 12 to 15 years, citing his guilty plea and good behavior in jail. The victim's family, deeply impacted by his death, was present in court, and the prosecutor urged for a deterrent sentence to prevent similar incidents.
