Multi-lane fast flow system won’t be rushed, says minister

Alexander Nanta Linggi, the works minister, has announced that the multi-lane free flow (MLFF) toll system will not be rushed into implementation. Speaking at a press conference following the MyAsean Road and Traffic Tech Expo 2026 in Kuala Lumpur, Nanta emphasized the importance of thorough negotiations among stakeholders, particularly highway concessionaires, before proceeding with the system.

The MLFF system, which aims to convert all exit and entry points on highways into barrier-free lanes to alleviate congestion and smooth traffic flow, is set to follow a business-to-business (B2B) model. This approach involves highway concessionaires and other interested parties collaborating to develop the system. Nanta reiterated that the government has given stakeholders ample time to finalize arrangements, and that the negotiations are still ongoing.

The Association of Highway Concessionaires Malaysia is expected to play a crucial role in facilitating these negotiations. Works ministry secretary-general Azman Ibrahim previously stated that the MLFF system could not be implemented until at least 2027. The MLFF system is part of Malaysia's ITS Blueprint (2019-2023), which aims to modernize the country's highway infrastructure.
