Meet the only Scot managing a national team in world football

Kurt Herd, a 34-year-old Scot, is managing the national football team of Dominica, an island in the Caribbean. At just over 4,000 miles from his hometown of Dundee, Herd is the only Scottish manager currently leading an international men's football team. Having taken up the role permanently in August after a brief stint, Herd wears many hats as the sole full-time staff member for the team, serving as the manager, analyst, scout, nutritionist, and yoga instructor.

Dominica's league is akin to League 2 in Scotland, and other Caribbean nations have employed foreign players to reach the World Cup. However, Dominica limits foreign players to six, a rule Herd aims to change by recruiting players with Dominican grandparents. Using social media, talent-spotters, and a network of contacts, Herd is actively seeking new players to bring the team's standards higher.

Apart from recruitment, Herd is also incorporating yoga, mindfulness, dietary advice, and sleep guidance into his coaching methods. The demanding nature of his job, which includes handling recruitment and coaching duties single-handedly, has left Herd tired but determined to transform Dominica's football scene. After two years of working with the island nation, Herd has grown fond of Dominica and its people.

While Herd is unsure about his future plans, his ambition is to make a mark in the club game at the highest possible level.
