Medical student storms to Stawell Gift glory

In April, Olufemi Femi Komolafe emerged victorious at the 2026 men's Stawell Gift, a 120-metre handicapped sprint race. The 21-year-old athlete set a new personal best that year to claim his first major title. Komolafe received a 5-metre handicap, starting behind most of his competitors. However, Sports Integrity Australia has now handed down a 12-month suspension for Komolafe after he tested positive for ADHD medication, a banned substance in sports due to its potential for performance enhancement.

ADHD medications are permissible in sports only when athletes have a medical diagnosis and are using them as part of a treatment plan. Sports Integrity Australia's chief executive, Sarah Benson, has expressed concern over the increasing number of inadvertent doping violations involving athletes using ADHD medication without a formal diagnosis.

Benson noted that the consequences for athletes found in breach of these rules can be severe, with potential bans ranging from one to four years. The Stawell Gift organizers have not confirmed whether Komolafe will be required to return his winnings or if his title will be stripped.
