Clarens named among South Africa’s best small towns to live in

Clarens, a Free State town in South Africa, has been recognized among the country's best small towns to reside in. This accolade highlights the town's appeal, which extends beyond its mountain scenery, art galleries, and laid-back atmosphere. Situated in the foothills of the Maluti Mountains and near Golden Gate National Park, Clarens provides visitors with an opportunity to unwind and appreciate its picturesque surroundings.

The history of Clarens dates back long before the town's establishment. Originally inhabited by the San, the area later saw the displacement of these indigenous people by the Basotho, who were then evicted by the Orange Free State. A new town was subsequently founded and named after the Swiss village of Clarens on Lake Geneva, a favored holiday destination of then-President Paul Kruger.

Initially, Clarens functioned as a central hub for the surrounding farming communities. However, its economic landscape began to transform in the 1920s, with tourism emerging as a dominant industry. As visitors flocked to Clarens for its scenic beauty and mild climate, the town evolved into a thriving artist colony, adding a creative dimension to its allure.
