Malawi: From Seaweed to Sanitary Pads - Malawian Scientist Pushes to Build Solutions in Africa

Malawian scientist Kennedy Mulungu is revolutionizing solutions in Africa through his innovative approaches. Selected as one of 10 young innovators from over 900 applicants to attend the United Nations Science, Technology and Innovation Forum in New York, Mulungu gained exposure to global science and innovation discussions. He leads Ubhwando Group Limited, working on sexual and reproductive health initiatives in remote Malawian communities.

Mulungu has developed biodegradable sanitary pads and wound dressings using alginate, a natural polymer sourced from seaweed. His goal is to eventually commercialize these products locally in Malawi. Mulungu emphasizes that his application's success was due to his focus on addressing real-world problems in Malawi rather than presenting innovation for the sake of it.

With his project BioAlgix, he explores how biomaterial science can address challenges such as women's menstrual health and farmers facing water scarcity and climate pressure. He believes that Malawi has the potential to build and commercialize solutions locally, breaking the cycle of foreign technology imports.
