KFDC offers ‘work from forests’ at Gavi, Suryanelli in Keralam

The Kerala Forest Development Corporation (KFDC) has introduced a unique workation programme in the forests of Gavi, Pathanamthitta, and Suryanelli, Idukki. This initiative offers remote workers the opportunity to combine their professional responsibilities with nature immersion. The idea was proposed by Forest Minister Shibu Baby John, who adapted successful workation models from other parts of the country for Kerala.

The KFDC opted for a low-impact approach, renovating existing forest rooms instead of building new facilities.

Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan officially launched the project on September 20, 2026. The KFDC has already started accepting bookings through its website, with a positive response from creative professionals, film teams, and corporate employees seeking workation opportunities. Connectivity was a significant challenge in designing the project, but BSNL engineers solved it by establishing an aerial link from Sabarimala to Gavi, providing speeds of around 100 Mbps at Gavi and up to 500 Mbps at Suryanelli. Backup generators ensure reliable power supply for remote meetings and file handling.

The rooms come equipped with extra power outlets, dedicated discussion areas, and outdoor routers for working from verandas or lawn tents. Meals, unlimited tea, and fresh local coffee are included in the package. After work hours, guests can enjoy guided nature walks, boating, birdwatching, and wildlife trails. Gavi, located deep within the Periyar Tiger Reserve, offers an ecotourism experience surrounded by evergreen forests and a lake.

Suryanelli, near Munnar, provides a high-altitude setting with tea plantations and stunning views. The three-night, four-day package costs ₹14,000 per room, plus taxes, or approximately ₹7,000 per person.
