Karachi Milk Could Hit Rs. 300

Dairy farmers in Karachi have urged a significant increase in milk prices, threatening to set the retail rate at Rs. 300 per liter if the government and local authorities do not approve a new rate. Shabbir Dar, a spokesperson for the farmers, stated that operating at present milk prices has become unprofitable. He warned that farmers could autonomously determine the retail price at Rs.

300 per liter if proper notification is not issued by the authorities. Dar accused the Commissioner of Karachi of negligence, alleging that the administration had neglected repeated appeals and meetings, and failed to convene a formal discussion with dairy farmers. He attributed the rising costs of cattle feed, transportation, and other operational expenses to the escalation in petrol and diesel prices.

Dar mentioned that the price of cattle feed has surged from Rs. 800 to Rs. 1,700, and other costs such as veterinary medicines, electricity, labor, and water have also experienced substantial hikes. The dairy farmers' representative called for authorities to revise milk prices based on the current production costs, warning that not setting a suitable rate could disrupt the city's milk supply.
