Japan, Mongolia leaders vow to deepen ties for greater prosperity

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and Mongolian Prime Minister Nyam-Osor Uchral convened on Tuesday to pledge enhanced cooperation between their nations for mutual prosperity. This marked the inaugural meeting between the two leaders, occurring amid Japan's efforts to fortify ties with Mongolia - a strategically vital democratic nation situated between China and Russia.

Amid China's rising military strength in the Indo-Pacific region and Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine since 2022, Takaichi expressed great optimism over Mongolia's unwavering backing for a Free and Open Indo-Pacific, a diplomatic strategy perceived as a subtle counterbalance to China's growing influence.

Takaichi emphasized her aspiration to further bolster the cooperative relationship between Japan and Mongolia for the sake of peace and prosperity. Despite being heavily reliant on China as its primary export partner and on Russia for fuel supplies, Mongolia adheres to a 'third neighbor' policy, aiming to fortify relations with countries such as Japan and the United States instead of solely relying on its powerful neighbors.

Uchral assured Takaichi that deepening relations and cooperation with Japan remains a top priority in Mongolia's foreign policy, and the nation is committed to continued close collaboration with Japan.

The leaders also applauded the signing and exchange of notes concerning Japan's financial aid for the expansion of Chinggis Khaan International Airport, which was constructed using Tokyo-funded loans and is viewed as a crucial project for improving the landlocked country's connectivity. Uchral described the expansion project as a symbol of the friendship and cooperation between their two nations.

Uchral, a 39-year-old leader who assumed office in March as Mongolia's prime minister, is making his first official visit to Japan. In recent years, Japan has intensified its relations with Mongolia, elevating their ties to a 'special strategic partnership for peace and prosperity' in 2022.
