Independence: FG declares Thursday public holiday

The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced that Thursday, October 1, 2026, will be a public holiday to commemorate the country’s 66th Independence Anniversary. This decision was made known to the public by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on Wednesday through a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary, Magdalene Ajani.

In his announcement, Tunji-Ojo expressed his congratulations to Nigerians, both at home and overseas, on this significant milestone. He emphasized the importance of unity, patriotism, peaceful coexistence, and mutual respect as essential values for the nation’s progress. Tunji-Ojo stressed that peace and stability were crucial for national development and urged citizens to emulate the love for the country demonstrated by the nation’s founding fathers.

He reminded Nigerians that the country’s diversity was a strength and that collective determination was vital in building a stronger, more prosperous Nigeria. Tunji-Ojo assured the public that the Federal Government remained committed to enhancing national security, improving public safety, and creating a safe environment for citizens to live, work, and pursue their aspirations confidently.

According to Tunji-Ojo, the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda will continue to strive for a better life for all citizens. He called upon Nigerians to celebrate this occasion to reaffirm their commitment to national unity and peaceful coexistence.
