Independence: FG declares Thursday public holiday

The Federal Government has announced that Thursday, October 1, 2026, will be a public holiday to commemorate Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary. Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the declaration on behalf of the government in a statement signed by Permanent Secretary Magdalene Ajani on Wednesday. In his announcement, Tunji-Ojo expressed his congratulations to Nigerians at home and abroad, encouraging them to celebrate the occasion by demonstrating unity, patriotism, peaceful coexistence, and mutual respect.

He emphasized that peace and stability are essential for national development and urged citizens to emulate the country’s founding fathers in their love for Nigeria. Tunji-Ojo highlighted that the nation’s diversity is a strength and that collective determination is the foundation for building a stronger and more prosperous nation.
