In Johor Bahru, man’s reversing mishap sends car into two vehicles and an eatery

On September 29, 2026, a 69-year-old man inadvertently crashed his Toyota Camry into two vehicles and an eatery in Taman Daya, Johor Bahru. The incident unfolded after the man mistakenly pressed the accelerator instead of the brake while reversing. Police were alerted to the collision following the spread of videos and images on social media around 2:20 pm.

Assistant Commissioner Azrul Hisham Mohd Shaffie of Johor Bahru South Police stated that preliminary investigations revealed the local man was en route home after breakfast at an eatery on Jalan Daya when the mishap occurred. As he attempted to reverse, the Toyota Camry jolted backward, colliding with a Proton Saga parked behind.

Panicking, the driver then pressed the accelerator again, causing the vehicle to reverse further and collide with another white Toyota Camry situated in front of the eatery. The aftermath saw all three vehicles, along with the eatery, sustaining damage, though no injuries were reported. The driver's negligence in operating the accelerator, leading to loss of control, was cited as the probable cause of the accident.

The case is now under investigation under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. Similar incidents have occurred previously, including one in Pandan Perdana, Ampang Jaya, where an 89-year-old driver accidentally hit a motorcyclist, a flower seller, and a pedestrian while attempting to park.
