High Commission sends warning to Ghanaians in South Africa ahead of planned protests

The Ghana High Commission in Pretoria has issued a caution to Ghanaian nationals residing in South Africa regarding upcoming protests on September 30, 2026. The demonstrations are believed to be associated with the March and March movement and other groups advocating against undocumented immigration. The High Commission warns that these protests could impact central business districts in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng provinces.

It advises Ghanaians to stay away from protest gatherings, marches, and areas where confrontations may occur, even if the protests start peacefully. The High Commission also recommends limiting non-essential movement on the day, especially in central business districts, transport hubs, taxi ranks, major intersections, and other crowded areas.

Travellers should prepare for potential road blockages, public transport disruptions, and sudden changes in the security situation, allowing extra travel time for essential journeys. The High Commission also urges Ghanaians to verify the validity of their passports, permits, visas, and other immigration documents, keep phones charged, stay in contact with family and community leaders, and have essential items like food, medication, and necessities on hand.

They are advised to follow the instructions of the South African Police Service and other authorized security agencies, rely only on official and credible sources for information, avoid sharing unverified social media content that could cause unnecessary fear or panic, remain calm, vigilant, and law-abiding citizens. The High Commission emphasizes that the well-being and safety of Ghanaian nationals in South Africa are their top priority.
