High Commission sends caution to Ghanaians in South Africa ahead of planned protests

The Ghana High Commission in Pretoria has issued a warning to Ghanaian nationals residing in South Africa regarding upcoming protests planned for September 30, 2026. These demonstrations are connected to the March and March movement, along with other groups advocating against undocumented immigration. In a public advisory, the High Commission cautioned that these planned protests could impact various regions of the country, particularly central business districts in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng provinces.

Ghanaians living in or visiting areas with anticipated demonstrations are advised to stay away from protest gatherings, marches, and zones where confrontations might arise, even if the events seem peaceful initially. Additionally, the High Commission advised Ghanaians to limit non-essential movements on the day of the protests, especially around central business districts, transport hubs, taxi ranks, major intersections, and other places likely to attract large crowds.

The High Commission warned that these protests could lead to road blockages, public transport disruptions, and unforeseen changes in security conditions. They urged those who must travel for essential reasons to plan ahead and allocate extra travel time.

Furthermore, Ghanaians have been cautioned not to engage with protesters or become entangled in arguments or confrontations over immigration and related political matters. The mission also advised Ghanaians to ensure that their passports, permits, visas, and other immigration documents are valid and easily accessible. They recommended keeping phones fully charged, staying in contact with family members and community leaders, and ensuring they have essential supplies like food, medication, and other necessities, particularly for children, elderly individuals, and those with medical conditions.

The High Commission urged Ghanaians to adhere to instructions from the South African Police Service and other authorized security agencies and to rely on official and credible sources for information. They cautioned against sharing unverified messages, videos, and voice notes on social media that could instill unnecessary fear or panic. The mission stressed that the welfare and safety of Ghanaian nationals in South Africa remain a top priority for the High Commission.
