Government could dissolve GFA after poor AFCON start, says sports committee chairman

The Chairman of Parliament’s Select Committee on Sports, Ernest Henry Norgbey, has hinted that the government might contemplate dissolving the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and establishing a new football governing body. Norgbey made these remarks after Ghana’s national football team, the Black Stars, suffered a 4-2 defeat by The Gambia in their 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign, marking their second consecutive loss in Group C. This defeat came after the Black Stars got off to a poor start with a 2-0 loss to Ivory Coast in their opening match.

Addressing Akoma FM, Norgbey drew parallels with a situation in Nigeria, suggesting that the government could intervene by dissolving the GFA and initiating a fresh start. He underscored the importance of increased investment in Ghanaian sports. However, he clarified that he was not advocating for an immediate dissolution of the GFA.

Instead, he proposed that the committee should first assess the situation within the Black Stars camp before considering any significant decisions. He added that if Ghana faced a two-year ban, that time could be utilized to rebuild and restructure the system. The Black Stars are set to resume their qualifying campaign in October with a double-header against Somalia at the Accra Sports Stadium.
