China surge to 150 golds at top of Asian Games medal table

China's divers have extended their impressive Asian Games unbeaten record, which began in 1974, as Games organizers apologize for inconveniences during the event. The country's divers have won a total of 150 gold medals, with four days left in the Games. Host Japan trails with 50 golds, followed by South Korea with 24. Chen Yiwen and Lian Junjie each secured gold in the final two diving events, giving China a 14th consecutive clean sweep in the sport.

Chinese divers have won every diving gold medal since their first Asian Games appearance 52 years ago.

China's Chen Yiwen, a double Paris Olympics champion, spoke about the team's efforts, saying, "Girls are every bit as capable as boys. We are pushing ourselves to perform more difficult dives, too. We do not train any less than the boys." In tennis, Philippines star Alexandra Eala advanced to the semi-finals, cheered on by fans who had traveled from far and wide to see her compete.

The world number 18 and favorite for women's singles gold had to work hard early on against Taiwan's Joanna Garland, winning 7-5, 6-0 in their second encounter in Nagoya.

Taiwan boxer Lin Yu-ting, the Olympic champion who faced controversy at Paris 2024, secured a spot in the final by defeating Uzbekistan's Sitora Turdibekova 5-0 in the women's 60kg class. Lin thanked the medical team for treating her nose cut from the quarter-finals. In football, South Korea secured a 2-1 victory over China in the men's semi-finals, advancing to face Japan for the gold medal after Japan defeated Uzbekistan 9-8 on penalties.

South Korean golfer Tom Kim, a four-time US PGA Tour winner, played a three-under par 67 in his Games debut, sharing seventh place.
