General : Police To Seek Interpol Help Over Sarawak Convenience Store Attacks

KUCHING, September 30 — Sarawak police are set to enlist the aid of international law enforcement bodies, such as Interpol, to track down suspects who allegedly fled the country following attacks on convenience stores across the region. Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mohamad Zainal Abdullah, who also serves as the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) Management Department director, disclosed that three individuals have been apprehended thus far, while approximately 10 more have been linked to the group.

Speaking to reporters after a monthly assembly of the Sarawak Police Contingent, Mohamad Zainal revealed that the incidents appear to be the result of a business dispute, possibly involving the sale of top-ups utilized for online gambling. He also stated that police have uncovered instances of convenience stores misusing their business licenses for these activities, which will be addressed by writing to the relevant local authorities (PBT) for further measures.

On September 21, Mohamad Zainal had announced that police were actively pursuing suspects connected to the Kuching and Sri Aman convenience store attacks on September 20, during which explosive or flammable materials were thrown into the stores. The police received two reports of these incidents, which shared a similar modus operandi.

Additionally, Mohamad Zainal indicated that police are nearing the completion of their investigation into the Air Medical Services (FDS) helicopter crash in Long Lellang, although the cause remains unknown. He noted that there is no evidence of sabotage, with the incident possibly resulting from technical issues; however, the final determination will be left to the Air Accident Investigation Bureau (BSKU), which will release its findings upon completion of the investigation.
